In which we went to a concert

After visiting the cathedral (post on that later), we walked around awhile longer then split up to find lunch.

This is a giant gold ball with a statue of a man on it next to a big chess board.  Don't ask me why.

This is the Festung (fortress) on top of one of the mountains that overlooked the city.  It's in remarkably good shape because the Prince Archbishop in charge during the 30 Years War kept Salzburg out of the fighting.

This is the funicular railway that runs into the fortress which we would take the next day.  There's an older version on a different side of the fortress that is actually a lot older that was used to haul freight when the fortress was inhabited.  That one was drawn by a pulley system powered by horses turning a wheel.

This is a fountain in the plaza between the Old Residence, the cathedral, and the Salzburg Museum.  (Yes it shows up in the Sound of Music if you know where to look.)

Here's where a bunch of horses were taking a nap while waiting for customers.

We met back at the St. Sebastian Institute before heading for Schloss Mirabell for the concert.  This is the ground floor lobby area.

The staircase to the first floor.

Schloss Mirabell is a palace on the opposite side of the river Salzach from the cathedral and fortress and whatnot.  Back in the day, it was outside of town, but then the town grew around it.  It was built so Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich Raitenau could go about having fifteen children with his mistress discretely.

The concert was held in the Marmorsaal (Marble Room), which is indeed made of marble.  This room is pretty much only accessible if you attend a concert.

IIRC, this room was decorated during the 19th century in imitation of earlier Rococo style, which is why some of the details look a little off.

Here we are waiting for the concert to begin.

The concert consisted of a pianist and a violinist playing duets.  I enjoyed it (though I still have difficulty sitting still that long).

Here's the staircase we used.

Ceiling details on the way out.

I was dawdling on my way out to take some more pictures, in which time the students disappeared on us.  At that point I was tired, so I just went back to the hotel, showered, and read for awhile.  The next morning, we visited the fortress together.
